Children's church lesson: Simeon and Anna

Story
Hold up the first pages of the story so the children can see the pictures
Say: Do you see this picture of all the smiling people?  In our story all of these people are passing around baby Jesus.  As we read we are going to play a gme.  When I pause in our story, say “Praise God!”

Read Simeon and Anna (Jesus is dedicated) in any children's story bible .  Pause after Simeon holds up Jesus and praises God, and when Anna holds up Jesus and praises God.
Lesson
Say: Who Held the baby Jesus in our story? (Simeon and Anna)  Why are Simeon and Anna so excited? (God promised to send Jesus. God kept the promise.  Jesus is the one God sent to save us.)  Simeon and Anna praised God for keeping a promise to send Jesus to save the whole world.  How do we praise God? (Sing, pray, say thanks)
God made a promise to send Jesus to save the whole world.  God kept that promise, and Jesus was born!  God promised to send Jesus to save us from sin.  We sin when we do things that God doesn’t want us to do.   Jesus came as a baby to save us all.  Thank you God for Jesus!
Memory Verse
Jesus is a light to show God to all the people. – Luke 2:32
Big Idea
God made a promise to send Jesus to save the whole world.  God kept that promise, and Jesus was born!
Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Take a minute to see if the children have any prayer requests of joys.  Say short prayer thanking God for loving us and sending us his son.

Craft
Children will decorate the name of Jesus (spelled out) using crayons, stickers, stamps and etc.

Children's church lesson: Jesus is born!

Story
Say:  There is a very special holiday coming soon, what is it? (Christmas)  That’s right! What does Christmas a celebration of? (Jesus’ birthday)  Yes!  Today we are going to read the story of Jesus birth.  Where was Jesus born? (In a stable)  And what was in the stable? (Animals)   You guys are so smart!  When I read about the animals I want you to make that animal sound, ok?

Read “Jesus is Born” in the any children's story bible.  When you read the sounds the animals made, allow the children time to make those same sounds.
Lesson
Say: What a story!  Praise God!  Jesus is born!  Who were the first people to hear about Jesus birth? (The Shepherds)  Who else celebrated in the story? (Angels, Stars, Mary and Joseph, the animals)  Why is Jesus birth so important? (Jesus is the savior of the world)
That’s right!  Jesus birth is so important and such wonderful news because Jesus is the son of God.  When Jesus is born, heaven and earth celebrate God’s love!  He came to this earth so that everyone who believes in him will be with him forever!
Memory Verse
The time came for the baby to be born. – Luke 2:6

Big Idea
When Jesus is born, heaven and earth celebrate God’s love!

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Take a minute to see if the children have any prayer requests of joys.  Say short prayer thanking God for loving us and sending us his son.

Advent Youth Lesson Three: The Messiah is here

Game Idea: If You Love Jesus Please Smile:
Students will sit in a circle.  One student is "it" and must go around the circle and say to each student "if you love Jesus, please smile."  They can do anything to a student to smile as long as he or she does not touch the student.  The other player must resist smiling and say, "I really love Jesus, but I just can't smile."  If a smile is cracked the smiling player is now "it."

Bible Passage 1: Luke 2:21-33

Bible Passage 2: Luke 2:36-38

Discussion

  1. Why do think people use advent calendars or paper chains during the Christmas season?
  2. Could you imagine waiting years to celebrate Christmas? If you knew that it was coming but didn’t know exactly when, how would you feel about waiting?
  3. Why do you think Simeon and Anna were willing to wait so long for the promised Messiah?
  4. How do you think they handled the moments when they got discouraged?
  5. Do you feel like you are waiting for something from God? Explain.
  6. Does our ability to wait for things, people, or promises say something about our hearts? Why or why not?

Wrap Up
Say: Waiting for Christmas is fairly easy for us because we know exactly when it is and how long until the day arrives. Imagine that you have been waiting years for the birth of the promised Messiah. Anna and Simeon waited years to see the Messiah; they never lost hope and they never stopped devoting themselves to God. They likely faced discouragement and frustration, but they continued to listen for God’s leading, comfort, and direction. When we listen for God’s voice and God’s leading, we discover amazing truths and witness God doing incredible things.  The Christmas Season is not just about looking back on what God has done by sending His Son, it is also a time to recognize what God is doing in our world and in our lives today as well as a time to hope and wait for what God will ultimately do when Jesus returns a second time.

Prayer
Give the students time to share prayer requests AND praises (strongly encourage students to contemplate their blessings).  Close by thanking God for sending His son and asking Him to help us remember what that really means and to trust in Jesus.

Children's church lesson: Mary Visits Elizabeth

Story
Say: Today's story is about someone with really good news to share.  She had to travel a long way to share the news.  Look at this picture from the story, does anyone in this picture look happy? (Show picture from the story)  Every time you hear something happy or exciting say "Woo Hoo!" and wave your arms.  Are you ready?

Read "Mary Visits Elizabeth" in any children's story bible.  Give the children time to respond with a "Woo Hoo" whenever appropriate.

Lesson
Say: Who had good news in this story? (Mary and Elizabeth) What was the good news? (they were both going to have babies!)  Who travels to share the good news? (Mary) What happened when the good news was shared (Mary and Elizabeth were happy, sang a song, and celebrated together).

What kinds of news do you like to share?  How do you share that news?  With whom do you like to share it?  What good news about God have you told someone about?

When we have good news we like to share it.  The birth of Jesus is some of the greatest news ever and we need to share it with others!

Big Idea
The birth of Jesus is some of greatest new ever and we need to share it with others!

Memory Verse
Marry hurried to visit Elizabeth. -Luke 1:39.  Remind the children that we should hurry and share the good news about Jesus birth too!

Prayer
Take a minute to see if the children have any prayer requests or prayer joys.  Say a short prayer thanking God for love us and sending us his son.  Ask God to help us share the good news with others.

Advent Lesson Two(of Three): Crazy News

Game Idea:  The Clap Game – see rules at: http://www.thatyouththing.com/resources/crowdbreakers.htm

Bible Passage 1: Luke 1:26-28

Video: A Social Media Christmas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sghwe4TYY18

Bible Passage 2: Matthew 1: 18-25

Discussion
  1. Ladies, what would it be like to be in Mary’s situation?
  2. Guys, what would it be like to be in Joseph’s situation?
  3. How do you think your family and friends would react if you were in Mary or Joseph’s situation?
  4. How did trust, or faith in God play into Mary and Joseph’s situation?
  5. How do you think God’s past faithfulness played into Mary and Joseph’s trust in God?
  6. How does trust play into our own situation as we prepare for Christmas and how does that trust effect the way we live our lives?

Wrap Up
Say: It took a lot of trust in God for Mary and Joseph to go along with his plan.  We saw from the video that Mary and Joseph probably lost a lot of friends and family and respect because of God’s plan.  Mary and Joseph had to trust that God would do what He said He would and also trust that He would get them through their rough situation.  It takes a lot of trust for us to believe in the Christmas message too.  If we do believe that Jesus is the savior than that trust should affect what we believe about many other things and how we live our lives too.

Prayer
Give the students time to share prayer requests AND praises (strongly encourage students to contemplate their blessings).  Close by thanking God for sending His son and asking for help to trust in Him the way Mary and Joseph did.

Children's Church Lesson: Angels Visit (The Annunciation)

Story
Say: Hello everyone!  Are you taller today?  You look like you’ve been growing.  We all start life as little babies, then grow and grow into big kids.  Someone in our story started small like us: Jesus!  Jesus was born as a little baby to his mother Mary and her husband Joseph.  Do you know who told them Jesus was coming to them? (Angels)
There are two angels in this story.  I wonder what angels look like, do you? Listen closely to the story.  Each time I read the word angel, flap your arms like wings.  Angels are polite and patient, so after I’ve said the word angel and then keep reading hold still and be patient until you hear  the word again.

Read “Angels Visit” (Annunciation) in any children's bible.  Exaggerate the word angel in your reading, allowing “flying time” for the children.

Lesson
Say: What did Mary and Joseph do when they saw the angels? (They were afraid, but they listened and believed)  What did the angels tell Mary and Joseph? (Do not be afraid. You will have a son; he will be God’s son, name him Jesus) Why was Jesus’ coming such a big deal? (He is the son of God; he came to save us all)
That’s right, Jesus’ coming was so special because he is the son of God and he came to save the world!  God sent his son as a new born baby, just like all of us!  The bible tells us that this new born baby has been with God since the beginning of time.  Jesus helped God create the world!

Memory Verse
Nothing is impossible with God. – Luke 1:37

Big Idea
God send His son Jesus and he was born a baby just like we were born.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Take a minute to see if the children have any prayer requests of joys.  Say short prayer thanking God for loving us and sending us his son.

Craft
Children will make angles using cotton balls and muffin cups.

Advent Youth Lesson One (of three): The Word Became Flesh

Make sure to stop right at 2:20 (to avoid language).  If you can’t project a computer you can play

this segment from the movie Talladega Nights.

Discussion
1)      When we think of Jesus at Christmas what do we think of? (Baby, human, etc)
2)      How does this compare with Ricky Bobby’s Jesus? (Similar in a lot of ways)
3)      What does John 1 have to say about Jesus? (Existed from the beginning of time, had a hand in creation)
4)      Why is it important to remember what John has to say about Jesus during the Christmas season? (Jesus is not just a baby, He is our savior and He is the son of God.)
5)      How does the way we think of Jesus affect our personal relationship with Him?

Wrap Up
Say: The season of Advent (or Christmas – if students aren't familiar with Advent) is all about trust.  If we trust that Jesus is our Messiah/Savior than we trust that baby Jesus was also the Son of God and the co-creator of the universe.

Prayer

Give the students time to share prayer requests AND praises (strongly encourage students to contemplate their blessings).  Close by thanking God for sending His son (in all his glory and power) to earth as a helpless baby to save us all.  If Jesus was just another baby than He cannot be the messiah.

Anger Management: Cain and Abel

Story
Raise your hand if you ever get Angry.  Is it ok to be angry? (Yes) Do you make good choices or bad choices when you are angry? (Bad)  Is it ok to make bad choices when you are angry? (No)
Today we are going to read a bible story about two brothers and a very bad decision that was made because of anger.

Read “Cain and Abel” in any children's story bible (or Genesis 4).
Lesson
Why did Cain get angry? (God like Abel’s offering better)  What bad choice did Cain make (Killed Abel).  I doubt that any of us would hurt someone that badly.  What are some bad choices you make when you are angry? (Mean words, hit, etc., let the children share)
The bible tells us not let our anger make us sin.  What are some ways that we can keep from sinning when we are angry? (Use our words to tell the person they are making us angry, ask a grown up for help, as God to help us – take time for children’s answers).  These are all great answers!
One way we can keep form making a bad choice when we are angry is using our words to tell the person that they are making us angry.  That way they can stop doing the thing that makes us angry and sometimes just telling someone we are angry makes us less mad.
Another good choice to make when we are angry is to ask for help form an adult.  This is really important is using our words has not helped the situation.
Sometimes using our words and getting help from a grown up is not enough.  If we are still really angry after all of that we need to pray to God and ask him to take away our anger.
Memory Verse
“In your anger, do not sin.” Ephesians 4:26
Big Idea
Its ok to be Angry but it is not ok to sin in our Anger.   We need to tell people when they make us made and ask God for help.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Say a prayer asking God to help us make good choices when we are angry.

Craft
Children will draw a picture of what makes them angry and a picture of what they can do when they are angry to keep from sinning.

Youth Group Discussion: Anger- Work it Out

Bible Verse 1: Matt 5: 21-24

Video: The Skinny on Truth and Grace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thpqXF04IkY

Bible Verse: Matt 18: 15-18

Five Questions:
1.     Help me understand what the Bible passages say about anger. (Reread them) Tell me what the Bible says in your own words.
2.     Have you ever been really angry with a friend or parent?  Does that feel different than being angry with an enemy or someone you barely know?
3.     The Bible passage says that becoming angry with someone is like murder.  How does make you feel?
4.     Jesus gives specific ways to deal with people who makes us angry or who have wronged us.  What are they?
5.     Jesus and the Skit Guys say that if you become angry with someone you should try to show them “Grace”.  What does that mean? ……….We’ll talk more about Grace next week.

Close in prayer and ask for prayer requests.

Children's lesson: Work it Out (Matthew 18:15-20)

Scripture Reading
Say: Have you ever done something that was not so nice?

It's hard to admit, but I bet we can all think of times that we haven't been as kind as we could have been. And I bet you can also think of times that others have been unkind to you.

So here's a question: What should we do about it?

That's a pretty easy question when we're the ones who are wrong, isn't it? What's the right thing to do when we've been unkind in some way? (Apologize - and change our behaviors.) But what about when others are unkind to us?

What's the best way to solve that problem? (Solicit children's answers)  Sounds like you have some very good problem solving skills!

Jesus says that when others have sinned against us - and done something unkind - that the first thing to do is have a talk with them. Most of the time when you have a problem talking it over can get things fixed, can't it?

If that doesn't work, maybe we need to some help? Sometimes asking a friend or two can really make things better.

And when none of that works, sometimes we just need to take a break - don't we?
Sounds like your ideas are a lot like Jesus' when it comes to solving problems. Keep those good ideas in mind this week, ok?

In tonight's Gospel Jesus teaches a lesson about problem solving in our relationships with others - and what he suggests sounds similar to some of your ideas.   Let’s see what Jesus has to say

Read Matthew 18:15-20  from The Message

15 "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him - work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend. 16 If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again. 17 If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love. 18 "Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.  19 When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action. 20 And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."

Lesson
Today our Gospel story Jesus tells us how to work things out with other people.

Jesus asks us to work things out and to remember that the other person is a loved child of God just like we are--and Jesus promises to be with us even when we are angry or in a fight with someone else. You can take anytime in your life and Jesus promises to be there with you and with the other person.

Memory Verse
15 "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him - work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend. – Matthew 18:15

Big Idea
Jesus asks us to work things out and to remember that the other person is a loved child of God just like we are.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Say a prayer thanking God for his love, and for sending his son, Jesus, so that we can live forever with Jesus.  Ask God to help us be forgive others.

Jesus at a Pharisees House

Scripture Reading
Last Sunday we learned a new word.  Who can tell me what that new word was? (humble)  That’s right?  What does it mean to be humble? (Help others, put others before yourself).  Those are great answers!  Today we are going read a story from the bible to learn more from Jesus about how important it is to be humble!

Say: Read Luke 14:1-14 from The Message

Luke 14:1-14

14 1-3 One time when Jesus went for a Sabbath meal with one of the top leaders of the Pharisees, all the guests had their eyes on him, watching his every move. Right before him there was a man hugely swollen in his joints. So Jesus asked the religion scholars and Pharisees present, “Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath? Yes or no?”
4-6 They were silent. So he took the man, healed him, and sent him on his way. Then he said, “Is there anyone here who, if a child or animal fell down a well, wouldn’t rush to pull him out immediately, not asking whether or not it was the Sabbath?” They were stumped. There was nothing they could say to that.

Invite the Misfits

7-9 He went on to tell a story to the guests around the table. Noticing how each had tried to elbow into the place of honor, he said, “When someone invites you to dinner, don’t take the place of honor. Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host. Then he’ll come and call out in front of everybody, ‘You’re in the wrong place. The place of honor belongs to this man.’ Red-faced, you’ll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left.
10-11 “When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.”

12-14 Then he turned to the host. “The next time you put on a dinner, don’t just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor. Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks. You’ll be—and experience—a blessing. They won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned—oh, how it will be returned!—at the resurrection of God’s people.”
Lesson
Who did Jesus visit in the story? (A Pharisee) Why did Jesus say you shouldn't sit in the seat of honor? (asked to move to a seat that is not as good/humiliated) What may happen if you sit in the worst seat? (asked to move to a better seat) Do you think it is a good idea to act like you? are better than others? Why or why not?  (take responses) Why do you think Jesus told this parable? (take responses; to teach us to be humble)
Jesus wanted the people to learn that everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.  Jesus also taught the people to invite all kinds of people when having a feast. Even though they cannot repay you, you will receive your reward in heaven.
Jesus cares about the people around and Jesus wants us to help them.

Memory Verse

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble - Proverbs 3:34

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Say a prayer thanking God for his love, and for sending his son, Jesus, so that we can live forever with Jesus.  Ask God to help us be humble.

Children's Church Lesson: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Story
Today, we worship Jesus as our Teacher. Through His parables, Jesus teaches us about God’s kingdom. In the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, we will learn God is pleased with humble hearts. Humble means treating other people as more important than we are. When we confess our sins to Him and focus on who He is and what He has done instead of focusing on our own importance, that's worship!
Say: Read “The Pharisee and the Tax Collector” in any children's story bible

Lesson
Jesus told this parable to people who were looking down on others. That means they
thought of themselves as better than others. What was the difference between the Pharisee’s prayer and the tax collectors’ prayer? (The Pharisee bragged and looked down on others. The tax collector humbly asked for mercy.)
In his prayer, the Pharisee bragged about the good things he had done and looked down on the tax collector. What good things did the Pharisee brag about doing? (Fasting twice a week, giving a tenth of his money.) God is pleased with good deeds when we do them for the right reason. The Pharisee’s good deeds did not please God because the Pharisee was bragging and looking down on others. His heart was not humble. How do you think God feels about our bragging? (Children respond.) How do you think He feels when we look down on others? (Children respond.)
The tax collector humbly asked for mercy – that means he asked for God to forgive him. God forgave the tax collector. He wants us to have humble hearts as the tax collector did. He is not pleased if we look down on others for what they do, what they look like, or for any reason at all! He is not pleased when we brag and praise ourselves as the Pharisee did. He is pleased with a humble heart. Those with humble hearts do not judge others. They treat others as more important than themselves. To be humble we must put away all our pride.
Memory Verse
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. - Luke 18:14
Big Idea
God wants us to be humble.  Being humble means putting God first and seeing others as more important than ourselves.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Say a prayer thanking God for his love, and for sending his son, Jesus, so that we can live forever with Jesus.  Ask God to help us be humble.

Children's Church Lesson: Light of the World (Jesus and Nicodemus)

Story

Today’s story is about a man named Nicodemus who came to Jesus to ask him some questions.  What questions would you ask Jesus? (Let the children respond)  Those are great questions.  Let’s see what questions Nicodemus asked, and what Jesus said about it.

Read “The Light of the World (Jesus and Nicodemus) ” in any children's story bible.

Lesson
Say: Why did Jesus visit Jesus at night? (He had many questions about God and didn’t want to wait; he didn’t want anyone to see him with Jesus)  What was the one thing that Jesus said Nicodemus needed to know?  (God loves everyone)  What did God do because He loves us all? (He sent Jesus).
Nicodemus had lots of questions for Jesus.  Many of them were about God.  What questions do you have about God? (Let the children answer – don’t feel like you have to answer the questions).  Those are some great questions!  Who do you think can help you find answers to those questions? (Parents, Pastor, Teachers, Bible, etc.)
God loves us and wants us to go to Heaven one day. How do we get to Heaven? We have to believe that Jesus died and came back to life. We must know that Jesus died for the wrongs we have done. We must tell Jesus we are sorry for our sins and ask Him to forgive us. Then, we must ask Jesus to come into our heart and help us live for God in all we do. Jesus promises to stay with us forever and take us to Heaven one day. If you want to know more about Jesus, talk to us anytime about it.

Memory Verse
God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him will live forever– John 3:16

Big Idea
Jesus says that what we do is more important that what we say.  We need to follow God with our actions.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Say a prayer thanking God for his love, and for sending his son, Jesus, so that we can live forever with Jesus.  Ask God to help us tell others this good news.

Children's Church Lesson: The Two Sons

Story

Say: Has your mother or your father ever asked you to help out around the house by doing some chores? I'm sure that has probably happened to you.  What are some things your parents ask you to do? (Take time for different answers) Today we are going to read about a story Jesus told about to sons who were given a chore from their father.

Read “The Two Sons” in any children's bible (You will need to explain what a vineyard is)

Lesson

Say: Who did Jesus tell the story to? (The Jewish leaders) What did the father ask the two sons to do? (Work in his vineyard)  Which son obeyed? (The one who said he wouldn’t work)

In our Bible lesson today, Jesus told a similar story to show how different people obey what God has called them to do. In Jesus' parable of the two sons, the father asked both sons to go and work in his vineyard. Just as the two boys in my story, one son answered, "No," but went and worked. The other son answered "yes" did not go. In telling the story, Jesus wanted us to realize that what we do is more important than what we say we will do. Jesus wants us to answer, "Yes," when he tells us to "Love one another," but what he really wants is for us to love one another! Jesus wants us to answer, "Yes," when he says, “Follow me," but what he really wants is for us to follow him! That's the kind of child I want to be. Isn't it the kind of child you want to be?  What are some things that God wants us to do? (Go to church, obey our parents, read the bible, ask him into our heart, etc. – give time for responses).

Memory Verse
Do not just read the bible.  Do what it says! – James 1:22

Big Idea
Jesus says that what we do is more important that what we say.  We need to follow God with our actions.

Prayer- Ask for Joys and Requests
Father, sometimes we say, "Yes," but our actions say, "No." Help us to be faithful to do what you have called us to do. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Craft- Family shield
Directions: Draw a shield and divide it into 4 sections Give each child a copy of the shield and ask them to complete the sections as follows:
1st Section: write their family name
2nd Section: draw a picture of their family
3rd & 4th Sections: draw pictures or write how they can helpother members of their family.

Many Members, One Body

Story
Say: What is the church? (take all answers)  Those are all great answers!  In today’s story we are going to hear what the Apostle Paul said the church is like.

Read “Many Members, One Body” (1 Corinthians 12:12-31) in any children's bible.

Lesson

Say: What was Paul busy doing? (Telling people about Jesus and his love for them)  What did Paul say the church is like? (The human body, one body has many parts)  How is the church like a human body? (Everybody in the church is different and has a special job to do, just like the parts of the body)

All of us are different and good at different things, just like the parts of the body.  If we all were good at the same things than the church would only be good at one thing.  It is important that everyone is different and it is important that everyone decide to use the things that they are good at to serve God!

Memory Verse
All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.  – 1 Corinthians 12: 27

Big Idea
It is important that everyone is different and it is important that everyone decide to use the things that they are good at to serve God!

Prayer
Say a short prayer thanking God for letting us be a part of His family and asking Him to help us to do our part as members of His body.

Craft
Children will cut out the different pictures of children (clip art) and use glue sticks to make the “body” of Christ out of the cut outs.

Game:Talent Show
Give every child a chance to show off something they are good at.

Children's Church Lesson: Sabbath Healing

Story
Say: What day is it today? (Sunday) What kinds of things do you usually do on Sundays? (Go to church, spend time with family, eat together, etc.) Those are all great things to do!  Sunday is a special day for us.  Back in Jesus’ time Saturday was a special day.  In Jesus day people focused on what you should not do on the special day instead of what you should do.  Let’s see what Jesus thought about that.

Read: “The Woman Who Could Not Stand Up” in any children's story bible

Lesson
Say:  What did God’s people call their special day and what was it for? (The Sabbath; worshipping God and resting)  What was the rule that the leaders made (You must not work on the Sabbath) What did Jesus do on one Sabbath? (He healed a crippled woman)  What did the leaders think about that? (They were angry because they though Jesus did work on the Sabbath)  How did Jesus say? (It is ok to do work if it is helping someone)
In Jesus time Sabbath was celebrated on Saturday today it is celebrated on Sunday.  The Sabbath is for worshipping God and resting.  The Sabbath is supposed to help us follow God.  The religious leaders were too worried about what you shouldn’t do on the Sabbath that they forgot what the Sabbath was really about.  The Sabbath, as well as all the other things we do to honor God serve the purpose of helping us love God and love other people.  Jesus said that helping others is a good thing to do on the Sabbath.
Memory Verse
